A Wordsmith’s Plight: What Dreams May Become

It is (or has been) said that a Writer’s Life is a lonely one.  On many accounts, perhaps this is true.  Even for those among us Writer’s who have successfully paired in one way or another, they (“our” mates not lost) are merely partners willing to share the moments we aren’t Writing with us, and provide the support and Muse-like qualities that the unsuccessfully paired try to find from “within”.  To all those who are and have been so willing to stick with us through the tumultuous cycles of productivity and lack thereof, for seeing us for who and what we are, and accepting it, for all of us -if I may be so bold-, I thank you!

As Writers, we are ALL Dreamers!  We seek to put in to “physical” form through words that which we dream, as we are -or feel as such- incapable of sharing “the view” as we perceive it any other way!  For our Dreams are all we have, and they define for us all that we seek to make real!  All Writer’s, whether of Fiction or Non, perceive the world in such a manner, that without the ability to express on “paper” -web-site, blog, through words spoken, whatever- that which makes “our” world “real”, cannot share adequately otherwise how we sense things to be.  We do not feel “normal” feelings, we feel intense passion(s) about all that surrounds us, and seek to communicate these perceptions in the only way we know how, with words, what matters to us most, and how it matters, who, and why!

We stumble between Dream and Reality, until somewhere along the way the blurred line takes form, and with ink/pencil/chalk/pick/keyboard/recorder in hand, what was merely a vision becomes tangible, something we can now see, feel, hear, and share with another!  Proving that it is more than grey matter between our ears, we thus “create” our reality(ies), making that which was before only or simply an imagining, something perceptibly different, whether as Fictional text or verifiable Documentation, our “Dreams” now have substance!  We are our own version of creators, and our Dreams are our own limits!  Finally, we don’t feel so alone!

And yet, in order to remain “understood”, we must then continue to write, to create, for once we are noticed for being Writers/Artists, it is no longer “ours alone”, but an ever growing beast that must be fed in order to sustain the ever increasing hunger for more!

But, in a very real sense, we -the Human Race- are all such creators!  We are all such Artists!  We all, whether by Pen, Hammer, Camera, Mortar (or even Mortar & Pestle), Numbers, Letters, Musical Notes, Dollars & Cents, Cooking Ingredients, Shovels, Paint & Easel, Dance Step, et al., shape and create the World as we perceive it, and wish it to be!  We determine at a very early age, what we think “our” world should be like.  What it should look like, how it should smell, taste, feel, sound!  And then spend the rest of our lives pursuing/creating those definitions!  Success or failure is determined solely by our strength of will, and whether or not we are able share it in a manner that is comprehensible to others!

To be sure, some are more successful than others, but the desire is the same!  The need to connect, no less compelling!  In whatever manner we try to express ourselves, we seek understanding from another, that we may launch forward with justification for continuing upon the path we’ve decided makes our Dreams most clear, most real, most attainable in the World outside our heads!

But we can then/now say, “This is Life, this is what makes it all worthwhile!”  And the more we can communicate this to, and that understand, and/or believe, the more “successful” we can call ourselves! We all have such potential for greatness! Our creativity is one of the most connecting aspects of our Humanity, and our individuality!  Sadly, though, it is also what keeps us most separate.

Too often expression is stifled, by those who don’t agree, or don’t understand, or don’t want to!  Sometimes it is thereafter more difficult to get back to the place where we were most understood, or we give up trying altogether for fear of further rejection and/or belittlement for our perceived uniqueness(es).  The irony is, we are all more similar than dissimilar.  It is only our lack of ability to adequately express ourselves, that allows for the confusion, the turmoil, the pain, to divide and conquer us.  Or we run away from those who see/understand us most clearly, for fear of association, for fear of closeness, for fear of a loss of self to the vision(s) shared.  It is also true that in some -if not many- cases, it is safer as well, for we/they are afraid of individuality, or change, and sometimes admitting that you are like another, or vice verse, is a case of too close for comfort.

And then there is also the possibility that we abandon our Dreams, shared or otherwise, out of laziness, a wanton desire to take the “easy way” out, instead of walking the walk as well as talking the talk.  Another problem is too many of us get lost along the way, or allow an other to dictate to us how they think it should be, and we then forsake our own perceptions, our own Dreams, for theirs (assuming the Dreams aren’t or weren’t alike/identical, and/or shared.)

It is however most often the case that our passions bring us together!  And when we are creative, instead of destructive with those passions, we are capable of making real all that is/was believed to be impossible!  Our words and their vibrations then resonate through all that we define as being “real”, whether relayed literally or hypothetically!  It is in the very words we use that we find definition, acceptance, Oneness.  Or we find confusion, rejection, and separateness.  It is here where we Writer’s struggle most.  For the very words intended to unite and bind, can also tear asunder, when spoken/written in duress, or out of anger as opposed to compassion.  The Pen is mightier than the Sword, and we forget all too frequently -or ignore- the impact those words may have as they are passed on, translated, or communicated by someone/something apart from the source.

What a World (our physical World) could/would be, if we would just focus our energies on creation, instead of domination and/or destruction!  What would/could be, if we all worked on sharing our Dreams, and helping each other to attain them, instead of undermining each other for the sake of greed, denying an other their right to Live their Dream by claiming our own is more important?

Our struggle continues, yet still we Dream.  And as long as we Dream, there will always be Hope.  And that chance that one day, through our words, we can bring into reality, that which once did little more than blur the line(s) between our sleeping and waking worlds!
